Fave Movie Moments: 2046

Just like most of his other films, Wong Kar-wai's 2046 is about lonely people longing for love. Although comprised of an ensemble cast, WKW's 2004 feast of lost love has Chow Mo-wan (Tony Leung Chiu-wai) as its focal point. Yes. The same dude from Days of Being Wild and In the Mood for Love.

2046 is a blatant sequel to In the Mood for Love. It portrays Chow as a jerk who enjoys having casual sex with women, a self-destructive path he chose after losing his one true love: Su Li-zhen (a special participation by Maggie Cheung).

I particularly liked the scene wherein Chow watches Wang Jing-wen (Faye Wong) through a glass window as she chats with her Japanese boyfriend (Takuya Kimura) on the phone.

Remember that quote from In the Mood for Love? "He remembers those vanished years. As though looking through a dusty windowpane, the past is something he could see, but not touch. And everything he sees is blurred and indistinct."

That's exactly what happens here. Chow fell for Wang, but he knows that he can't have her as her heart already belongs to someone else. The look on Chow's face and the way he touches the glass as if touching Wang's face from afar — a solid illustration of unspoken and unrequited love. Goes to show that some things are better left unspoken.

Despite his philandering ways, Chow still believes in love — even after Su is gone. He loved Wang and the second Su Li-zhen (Gong Li) as much as he loved the first. Love rules after all.

If you love a flower, don't pick it up.
Because if you pick it up it dies and it ceases to be what you love.
So if you love a flower, let it be.
Love is not about possession.
Love is about appreciation.

- Osho
