INSIDIOUS: CHAPTER 3

"Hahahahaha!" is what resonated inside the movie theater as our fellow moviegoers watch Insidious: Chapter 3. The profusion of laughter is courtesy of the audience, not the supernatural villain in the film.

"You smell funky. And I think I'm gonna need some neck brace."
- Quinn
Insidious: Chapter 3 is a prequel to the first two movies. It follows the story of a teenager named Quinn Brenner (Stefanie Scott), an aspiring theater actress dealing with the death of her mother, whom she wishes to talk to via psychic Elise Rainier (Lin Shaye). The rest of the film deals with Quinn's possession after her what-the-f*ck-inducing accident.
You need not watch the first two films to understand this one. This film mostly focuses on Quinn's possession, Elise's humble beginnings as a psychic, and basically anything that turns a horror movie into a ROFL-fest of epic proportions.
Because American horror movies often have ugly apartments, the film is mostly set on the somewhat rundown apartment where the Brenners live, hence the shots are generally murky. One of the film's strong points is its sound effects. The film's music guy knows when to put the sound that should come with a significant scene. So yeah, that's where the film gets its scare factor, aside from the prosthetics.
The main actors are also good. Lead actress Stefanie Scott — who could pass as Kendall Jenner's lookalike — is quite convincing as the possessed Quinn, albeit a very cliché character. Miss Shaye is also good as the psychic. Generally, most of the performances are not that outstanding, they are just okay.
Insidious: Chapter 3, as my friend puts it, is a film that mocks itself. It knows that it won't be taken seriously, so it laughs at itself by doing a lot of explaining, injecting some tongue-in-cheek humor, and obliging Elise into kicking the Bride in Black's a**. "Bring it on, bitch" is definitely the film's most memorable line. (For a second there, I thought I was watching some Quentin Tarantino movie.) Oh, and they also made some joke about lesbians for no particular reason.
To sum it all up, Insidious: Chapter 3 is a film that you watch when you have no more options left. When all the other films being shown are Jurassic World, Just the Way You Are, and Return to Sender, this funny horror movie is the one you'll probably watch, just for the heck of it.
